Robin Day Q-Stak Chairs, 1953

Set of 4 Q-Stak chairs by Robin Day in 1953 for Hille.

Following the success of the Hillestak, Robin Day worked with Hille to create another low-cost multipurpose stacking chair. The challenge was set to reduce the component count, to simplify materials and to reduce construction costs. The Hillestak appeared simple and unified, though employed over twenty separate components. The Q-Stak reduced this to seven; the seat, the two-part leg and two pairs of nuts and bolts.

The one-piece moulded plywood seat and back respected the early science of ergonomics with a profile to ‘give maximum comfort and freedom from fatigue.’

The design reflects an understanding for the need to provide lumbar support. The mono-shell was also designed with cut-out for ease of handling the chair and family was offered with various base options and with or without upholstered seat.

The Q-stak was a significant milestone British design history and examples are present in the V&A collection.
