Illums Bolighus cabinet, 1955.
Danish chest of drawers/cabinet from circa 1955, by an unknown designer and maker.
Through the 1940s to early 1960s this Danish store became internationally renowned for working with, and stocking, the very best Danish design and cabinet-making.
As such, it is likely the cabinet has been made (and designed) by highly respected craftsman.
The construction of drawer-units is always much more labour intensive than cabinets with doors.
The routed handles are extremely well executed and the composition of drawer sizes is well considered.
It is likely this design is an expression of high-quality making as well as a dramatic, though subtle design.
The overall dimensions and up-right format recalls classical cabinets of the eighteenth century. The provision of drawers in a range of dimensions references a historical collectors cabinet.
