Charles and Ray Eames, CTW 1945 Herman Miller
The Eames’ designed a range of tables to compliment their landmark plywood lounge chairs (LCW and LCM). They experimented with various leg configurations in both plywood and steel, though always with the sculptural moulded plywood top. The production of 4-legged CTW (Coffee Table Wood) and CTM (Coffee Table Metal) commenced in 1946. The design was a minimal statement in the use of wood and fixings, intended to be mass-produced, lightweight and functional.
Manufactured by Evans Products and then Herman Miller in 1949, the tables were produced until 1957. Vitra began production again in the 1990’s. The modernistic form, construction and design longevity cements the table as a design classic.
The early example offered is in ash veneer and likely to be Evans Moulded Plywood Division.
