Backless Portsmouth Bench, 2002

Backless Portsmouth Bench by Barber Osgerby for Isokon Plus.

Commissioned to design a bench for the choir stalls in Portsmouth Cathedral, Barber and Osgerby set out to create a seat that was both contemporary and complementary to the Romanesque architecture of the Cathedral.

Their resulting design is a lightweight bench that can seat up to three choir members and is sympathetic to its surroundings.

Now established as a contemporary classic, the Portsmouth bench is known for its combination of good design and manufacturing craftsmanship.
